Intermedia Design (B.A.)

(as of Winter Semester 2026)
Intermedial design is the art of letting different media speak to one another. Images, data, words, spaces and interfaces become an experimental field in which new forms of perception and knowledge emerge.

The eight-semester bachelor’s programme provides a broad, artistic and experimental design practice. Students work intermedially with image, text and code, developing their own design and research approaches. The programme fosters conceptual strength, critical thinking and technical versatility.

Graduates work in culture, media, research and creative industries – wherever the future is negotiated visually and conceptually. The programme understands design as a speculative, investigative and socially relevant practice.

Image. Text. Code.

The B.A. Intermediale Gestaltung offers an open learning environment between generalisation and specialisation. Individual study paths emerge through the interplay of image, text and code. Students develop a broad methodological understanding, a reflective artistic attitude and a sensitivity to diverse forms of media expression – ranging from moving image, typography and illustration to visual identities, interface design and information design.

The programme qualifies graduates for fields in which media design shapes communication and responds to the complex and changing conditions of contemporary society.

Intensive. Individual. Interdisciplinary.

The study programme in Intermedial Design is structured into three phases: A, B and C. In the first two semesters (Artistic Core Subjects A), students acquire fundamental skills in image, text and code. From the third semester onwards, Artistic Studio Projects B follow, in which two project-based works are completed per semester.

From the fifth semester onwards – as well as in the M.A. Intermedia Design – Artistic Development Projects C take centre stage. These projects enable in-depth, long-term work on one project per semester and support individual areas of focus and research-based approaches.

The study structure is deliberately flexible: in each phase, courses from earlier stages may also be taken. This flexibility allows for different pathways, ranging from focused artistic profiles to broadly conceived intermedial practices. At the centre of the programme is the free development of each student’s individual design position.
